The heart radical: 心 and 忄
心 xīn means heart and has four strokes. It sits at the bottom of characters like 想 xiǎng (think) and becomes the three-stroke 忄 on the left, as in 忙 máng (busy) and 怕 pà (afraid).
Three forms to recognize
| Form | Strokes | Position | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 心 | 4 | alone or at the bottom | 想 xiǎng think, want |
| 忄 | 3 | left side | 忙 máng busy |
| ⺗ | 4 | bottom, in a few characters | 恭 gōng respectful |
The ⺗ form is less common. It appears at the bottom of a small number of characters such as 恭 gōng (respectful) and 慕 mù (admire). You only need to recognize it; learning 心 and 忄 first is enough for most beginner reading.
Chinese speakers often call 忄 竖心旁 shùxīnpáng, "standing heart side," and the bottom 心 心字底 xīnzìdǐ.
Thought and feeling
In Chinese, 心 has long been associated with both emotion and thinking, so you will find it in words for both:
- 想 xiǎng: think, want, miss someone
- 思 sī: think
- 意 yì: meaning, intention
- 忙 máng: busy
- 怕 pà: afraid
- 情 qíng: feeling
- 懂 dǒng: understand
These characters are read xiǎng, sī, yì, máng, pà, qíng, and dǒng. None is pronounced xīn. Learn each reading on its own.
Not every emotion has a heart
Many feeling words use other components:
- 笑 xiào (laugh) has bamboo 竹 on top.
- 哭 kū (cry) has two 口 mouths.
- 喜 xǐ (happy) has no heart.
- 爱 ài (love) in simplified Chinese has no 心, though the traditional form 愛 does.
So 忄 or 心 is a good hint toward mind or mood, but a missing heart tells you nothing. Some heart characters also have meanings that seem far from feelings, like 快 kuài (fast).
Avoid neat origin stories
You may read stories explaining every heart character, for example why 忙 combines heart with 亡 wáng. Some are traditional explanations, some are modern inventions. If a story helps you remember, use it as a memory hook, not as history.
Recognition drill
Find the heart component in each character and say which form it takes: 念 快 怕 感 恭 情.
